[edit] SNA – John Wayne Airport, Orange County, CA, USA

Overview: SNA is a smallish airport laid out in a linear fashion, with two terminals (A to the South & B to the North). There are 14 mainline gates with jet bridges (No. 1-14, 1 at the Northern end, 14 at the Southern), and 6 commuter gates (1A-C, 14A-C). The commuter gates are located beyond the main gates, and can be accessed by going through the double doors at the end of the building, and going down to the portable building on the tarmac. It takes less than 15 minutes to walk the terminal building end-to-end.

Starting in 2007, construction on a new terminal (to the south) will begin, that will add more mainline gates and a true commuter concourse.

AA generally operates out of Gates 8-9 (usually to ORD/DFW), and 14 (usually to SJC). American Eagle flights are out of 14A-B. Alaska generally operates out of Gates 10 and 13.

Oh, and check out the new display at Gate 9. :)

Security: There are security checkpoints in each of the two terminals. Generally speaking going through security takes less than 5 minutes, with peak travel times early in the morning and in the evening as business commuters take their flights to work. There is a special line for premium cabins and elites.

Lounge: There is a small Admirals Club located above the central food atrium. The entrance is across from Gate 8. Enter using the elevator, or by stairs which you can access through the doors next to the elevator marked "Emergency Exit - Push Door to Sound Alarm" (I'm serious... it shouldn't go off). There is a small bar, a photocopy machine, and 2 computers. A conference room is available.

Luggage Storage: None.

Connection Information: SNA isn't generally used for connecting traffic. On that rare occasion, all gates are connected by a large concourse behind security. There are no ticket or transfer counters behind security.

Transportation: There is a central transportation center located just outside the baggage claim area, across the street. Taxis, hotel shuttles, door-to-door vans, and coaches are available here.

Public transportation is available via OCTA public buses. The stop is located on the lower arrival level, south of the baggage claim area. Look for the white/blue/orange sign. There are limited OCTA buses (Line 470) connecting directly to/from MetroLink Commuter trains at the Tustin Station (to SNA in the mornings, to MetroLink in the evenings). Lines 76 and 212 also directly serve SNA.

A central rental car center is located across the street from baggage claim, on Level 0 of the parking garage (one level down).

There is easy access to the 405, 55, and 73 freeways from SNA.

Food: Being a small airport, food selections are somewhat limited, but are all located airside. There are 3 Starbucks, 2 McDonald's, a few bar restaurants, a couple of bakeries, and several snack places available.
