[edit] Bonus Miles Calculation

American Airlines flights under 500 miles earn bonus miles as well (for class of service and/or for elites), and the calculation is a bit complex. dmfriedman investigated how they're calculated, and here is his report.

N.B.: AA has recently announced that the 500-mile minimum (RDM, EQM) is being eliminated for non-elites only, effective January 1, 2009. The announcement also indicates elimination of the 500 EQP minimum for all members and a possible change to the way EQP are calculated. Details are still being parsed and will be posted here when confirmed.

[edit] Sources of Miles

BASE: Base Miles according to flight mileage

COS: Class of Service miles according to

ELITE: Elite Status Bonus according to

MMG: Minimum Mileage Guarantee miles according to the various elite membership guides available at

BOOK: Booking Class Multiplier for EQM and EQP according to

[edit] Where Do the Miles Go?

RDM: Redeemable Miles

EQM: Elite Qualifying Miles

EQP: Elite Qualifying Points

[edit] How Are They Calculated?

These scenarios assume a Minimum Mileage Guarantee (MMG) of 500 miles, true for most (but not all) flights that earn AA mileage credit.

[edit] Standard formulas for EQM and EQP

EQM = BASE, but no less than MMG

EQP = BASE * BOOK (not MMG * BOOK, but total will be equal to no less than the MMG)

[edit] If the flight is more than 500 miles

Y/J/F: RDM = BASE + COS + ELITE

For a 800 mile flight by PLAT or EXP, for example:

Flight booked in F:
800 (BASE) + 400 (COS) + 800 (ELITE) = 2000 RDM
800 (BASE) = 800 EQM
800 (BASE) * 1.5 = 1200 EQP

Flight booked in S:
800 (BASE) + 800 (ELITE) = 1600 RDM
800 (BASE) = 800 EQM
800 (BASE) * 0.5 = 400 EQP, therefore MMG is used: 500 EQP

For a 2000 mile flight by PLAT or EXP, for example:

Flight booked in J:
2000 (BASE) + 500 (COS) + 2000 (ELITE) = 4500 RDM
2000 (BASE) = 2000 EQM
2000 (BASE) * 1.5 = 3000 EQP

Flight booked in S:
2000 (BASE) + 2000 (ELITE) = 4000 RDM
2000 (BASE) = 2000 EQM
2000 (BASE) * 0.5 = 1000 EQP

[edit] If the flight is between 334 and 500 miles

Y: RDM = MMG + ELITE
J/F: RDM = BASE + COS + ELITE

For a 400 mile flight by a PLAT or EXP, for example:

Flight booked in F:
400 (BASE) + 200 (COS) + 500 (ELITE) = 1100 RDM
500 (MMG) = 500 EQM
400 (BASE) * 1.5 = 600 EQP

Flight booked in M:
500 (MMG) + 500 (ELITE) = 1000 RDM
500 (MMG) = 500 EQM
400 (BASE) * 1.0 = 400, therefore MMG is used: 500 EQP

Flight booked in S:
500 (MMG) + 500 (ELITE) = 1000 RDM
500 (MMG) = 500 EQM
400 (BASE) * 0.5 = 200, therefore MMG is used: 500 EQP

[edit] If the flight is 333 miles or less

Y/J/F: RDM = MMG + ELITE

For a 200 mile flight by a PLAT or EXP, for example:

Flight booked in F:
500 (MMG) + 500 (ELITE) = 1000 RDM
500 (MMG) = 500 EQM
200 (BASE) * 1.5 = 300, therefore MMG is used: 500 EQP

Flight booked in M:
500 (MMG) + 500 (ELITE) = 1000 RDM
500 (MMG) = 500 EQM
200 (BASE) * 0.5 = 100, therefore MMG is used: 500 EQP

Flight booked in S:
500 (MMG) + 500 (ELITE) = 1000 RDM
500 (MMG) = 500 EQM
200 (BASE) * 0.5 = 100, therefore MMG is used: 500 EQP
