- Delta Airlines acquired Northwest Airlines during 2008.
- During 2009, the Northwest brand and flight numbers are expected to be converted to the Delta Airlines brand and flight numbers. Also the Northwest Worldperks frequent flyer programme is expected to be merged into Delta's frequent flyer programme.
- As a result of the Delta/Northwest merger, Continental Airlines was released from its commitment to belong to the SkyTeam airline alliance. Continental announced in late 2008 that it would be switching to Star Alliance. In early 2009, Continental announced that it would leave SkyTeam during the summer of 2009, and join Star Alliance in the fall of 2009.
