United is unique in allowing passengers to listen to air traffic control audio on channel 9 of the in-flight audio. Channel 9 is not always enabled, it is up to the captain's discretion, and is not available on all types of aircraft. Additionally, some captains do not turn it on until the flight is in the air, perhaps out of a desire to keep ground communications "private."
