[edit] Classes of Service

N.B. Sep 08 - Update in progress - page needs reorganization and coordination with "Types of Flights" page, as well as information on meals, Hawaiian Flagship Service, etc.

American Airlines offers the following classes of service:

  • International (3-class; 777-200 aircraft): First, Business, Economy
  • International (2-class; other aircraft): Business, Economy
  • Domestic (3-class Transcontinental; 777-200, 767-200 aircraft): First, Business, Economy
  • Domestic (2-class; other aircraft): First, Economy
  • American Eagle (1-class): Economy

[edit] International First Class (IFS)

All 777-200 aircraft are now equipped with Flagship Suites for International Flagship Service (IFS) First Class. The Flagship Suite seat has 92" pitch with a footrest, ottoman, and electric controls in a 1-2-1 configuration. The seat swivels and can be converted into a fully flat bed. Each Flagship Suite has a personal IFE screen with on-demand programming and passengers are provided with Bose QC3 noise-cancelling headphones for the duration of the flight. Passengers are also provided with a duvet and pillow.

[edit] International Business Class (IFS)

All 777-200 and 767-300 aircraft are now equipped with Next Generation Business Class lie-flat seats (can go completely flat but remain at a slight angle to the floor), with 56-60" pitch, a footrest, and electric controls. The 772 seats have a 2-3-2 configuration while the 763 seats have a 2-2-2 configuration. Each NGBC seat has a personal IFE screen on the seatback with on-demand programming and passengers are provided with Bose QC3 noise-cancelling headphones for the duration of the flight. Passengers are also provided with a duvet and pillow.

Beginning in late 2008, several 757-200 aircraft used for international routes are also scheduled to be converted to NGBC.

[edit] International Economy Class (IFS)

AA no longer offers "More Room Throughout Coach," so Economy seats typically have 31" of pitch. Exit row and bulkhead seats may be pre-reserved only by elites. Some seats are allocated for handicapped and their travelling companions, and pasengers selecting these seats may be reassigned (seats may be reserved, but seats are ultimately not guaranteed). Seat assignments may also be lost if there is a change of equipment (aircraft).

777-200 aircraft have personal IFE screens on seatbacks in Economy while other aircraft have only standard video monitors. Standard headphones may be used and are available for purchase onboard. Complimentary meals and non-alcoholic beverages are provided in Economy class on IFS flights that depart within traditional meal hours.

[edit] Domestic First Class (AFS Transcontinental)

Certain transcontinental flights feature 3-class American Flagship Service (AFS) on 767-200 aircraft. First Class is equipped with standard recliner seats with 62" of pitch and a footrest in a 2-1-2 configuration. Each passenger is provided with a personal IFE device (DVR) with on-demand programming and Bose QC3 noise-cancelling headphones for the duration of the flight. Passengers are also provided with a duvet and pillow.

Certain transcontinental flights feature 2-class American Flagship Service on 767-300 aircraft with NGBC seats in First Class. Each passenger is provided with a personal IFE device (DVR) with on-demand programming and Bose QC3 noise-cancelling headphones for the duration of the flight. Passengers are also provided with a duvet and pillow.

As of mid-2008, AA is in the process of refitting 762 aircraft with new First Class seats with electric controls and a massage function. A 10th seat will also be added to the First Class cabin during the refits.

[edit] Domestic Business Class (AFS Transcontinental)

Certain transcontinental flights (JFK-LAX) feature 3-class American Flagship Service on 767-200 aircraft. Business Class is equipped with standard recliner seats with 50" of pitch, footrests, and manual controls in a 2-2-2 configuration. Each passenger is provided with a personal IFE device (DVR) with on-demand programming and Bose QC3 noise-cancelling headphones for the duration of the flight. Passengers are also provided with a duvet and pillow.

[edit] Domestic First Class (2-class)

On non-AFS flights on non-767 aircraft, domestic First Class has standard recliner seats with 39-40" of pitch, manual recline, and no footrests. There are no personal IFE devices and only a standard red blanket is provided to each passenger (no pillows). Standard domestic First Class includes free alcoholic drinks and a meal or snack, depending on flight time and length. Generally a flight must be longer than 2 hours and fly during traditional meal hours for a hot meal to be served. Snacks may be served on flights longer than 2.5 hours outside of traditional meal hours.

[edit] Domestic Economy Class

Meals are available for purchase in Economy class on flights longer than 3 hours that depart within traditional meal hours. Snacks may be available for purchase in Economy class on other flights. Complimentary non-alcoholic beverages are provided.

On non-transcontinental (AFS) flights using 3-class 777-200 and 767-200 aircraft, Business Class seats are available for pre-reservation by elites and full-fare passengers traveling in Economy. Other than the seat, however, only Economy Class service is provided.

See Planes and Seats for more details about what aircraft AA flies and the details of each cabin.
