[edit] Widebody Interior Conversions

This is a list of United's widebody aircraft undergoing the new interior conversions. Thanks to UnitedSkies for the initial data and everyone else on the Mileage Plus forum for their input (especially worldtrav). For United's view of Progress, go to the SuiteDreams web page and click on "Fleet Progress". Better graphics than this wiki, but typically not as up-to-date! For additional fleet information, see United Fleet (UA).

Note: Some of the early conversions do not yet have an iPod connector outlet in the seats. The later conversions do include this iPod connector output in the seats. Until you board the aircraft, you can't reliably know if the flight will support iPod connection to the in-seat AVOD system. It is believed that the older aircraft will eventually be upgraded to include the iPod connector during some scheduled AVOD maintenance interval. If anyone has information on a specific airplane having or not having the iPod connector, please post the information in the appropriate thread.

  • Aircraft marked with an en dash (–) are confirmed not to have the connector.
  • Aircraft marked with a plus sign (+) do have the connector.
  • Unmarked aircraft may have the connector, and may not.

See this FlyerTalk thread for additional information. Grounded 747s have been removed from the table - the 24 total assumes an additional two retirements, based on information such as this press release. However, a recent press release implies that there will be 26 747s going forward, but the suitedreams.com site implies the original 24 will be the final number. Until we know for sure, we'll leave the target at 24 planes.

My personal guess is that N187UA and N194UA will be retired - they're the only unmodified ones that haven't been repainted. - mahasamatman

Note: The 777 conversions are delayed due to a problem with updating the Y cabin seats. The first 777 is scheduled to go in for modification in September 2009, and we can expect to see the modified 777s begin to appear around November 2009. See post #5 in this FlyerTalk thread. As with the other international aircraft, it will take many months to upgrade the entire fleet.

[edit] How to tell if your plane has the new interior

The seating charts on united.com have been deemed notoriously unreliable in terms of determining if a particular flight is in fact one of the planes with the new seating configuration.

Current conventional wisdom is that (starting about 7 days before a scheduled flight) unitedcargo.com is a much more reliable indicator of which configuration will in fact be used on a given flight. Here is how to check:

  1. Go to unitedcargo.com
  2. In the right-most column, under "Other Tools", click on "Check Flight Schedule"
  3. Select the appropriate date plus "From" and "To" info; click on "Submit>>"
  4. Look for the flight number of interest

If "Type of Aircraft" shows "47C" or "67I" (as opposed to "B747" or "B767"), that says the aircraft is currently scheduled to be the new configuration.

YMMV. And last minute changes and equipment substitutions do happen...

(Note: From unitedcargo.com, using the "Flight Status" feature and inputting a value for "Flight Number" does not show any info for "Type of Aircraft".)
