Accounts with no activity for 12 consecutive months after enrollment or for three consecutive years may be closed. Miles do not expire with qualifying activity in any three-year period. Any miles earned or redeemed qualify as activity.

[edit] Fare basis
Earn miles on published fares excluding free tickets and travel industry free or reduced fares. Air Canada: Discounted flights within Canada earn 50% of actual miles. Lufthansa: Coach flights earn 50% of actual miles or 500 minimum mile (excluding flights between the U.S. or Canada and Germany).

United Airlines, United Express and codeshare flights operated by United no longer earn 500 minimum miles per segment. While members would accrue a minimum of 500 miles on flights before July 1, 2008, all flights after this date accrue actual miles flown. Flights operated by partner airlines (including Star Alliance carriers and non-allied partners) earn miles according to their published schedule, which may or may not include a minimum amount.

United Airlines and most partners: first class: 50% bonus; business class: 25% bonus. Air Canada, Austrian Airlines, Lauda Air, SAS, Tyrolean Airways, Spanair: business class: 25% bonus. bmi british midland: business class: 25% bonus (between the U.K. and the U.S.). Air ALM: business class: 25% bonus (between Miami and Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao or Port-au-Prince). BWIA: business/first class: 50% bonus.(Be careful about BMI, there have been some indications that some fares will earn less than full mileage)
You also earn 1.5 EQMs for each mile flown on paid premium cabin travel on United and Lufthansa. This is different from the mileage bonus you receive. EQMs are tracked to determine the status that you reach at year end.

Earn 500 mileage plus bonus miles each time you check in for your flight via the online EasyCheck-in. You may check in from 1-24 hours prior to departure. This promo was running from November 15, 2005 - June 30, 2006. You can elect to change seating and/or upgrade your seat assignment to First on domestic routes using 500 mile certs (if they are in your account). Or you can purchase them in packs of 4 (500 mile x 4) for $200.

Members with mileage balances near an award threshold are able to purchase miles to add to their remaining balance and redeem them for an award. Members may purchase up to 15,000 miles per year in increments of 1,000. The cost is 2.5 cents per mile, plus 7.5% excise tax and a .001 per mile processing fee. Miles may also be purchased as gifts or company incentives.

Monthly electronic statements sent via e-mail to subscribers, regardless of account activity. Paper statements sent quarterly to members with recent account activity.
As the information included in these statements is often old by the time you receive it, it is recommended you use the UAL.COM function to review your Mileage Plus activity and current balance.
You can also access information via the MyMileagePlus interface which can be a little more friendly - but contains only a summary. The problem with the Mileage Summary is that it includes promos, but does not indicate which have posted and which have not.

Miles do not expire as long as there is account activity within the previous 18 months. When they do expire after 18 months of inactivity, it may well be without any warning -- so pay attention!

Request credit online or by calling the service center within 11 months of travel date. Car and hotel partners require car rental agreement or hotel bill or copy of ticket and original boarding pass if a flight is required, mailed directly to the partner. Retroactive credit requests for car/hotel activity should be sent directly to the partner. The service center will credit airline partners. Members should be able to provide copy of ticket and boarding pass for missing mileage credit on partner airlines.
